How do you perceive engagement photography? Is it worth it to acquire photographs before a wedding, when you still obtain an album full of them afterwards? Let’s have a closer look at this more common trend and show its main assets.
Engagement photography
Engagement photography is not only about getting new photographs, which you can by the way use for creating a wedding announcements. It is hiding a lot of advantages, which might be useful right away or later, during a wedding day. I will describe more closely, which specific advantages I mean.
To get know each other
For sure the biggest benefit is the opportunity to get known each other better with a photographer, who will spend the whole day with you. It is already expected that the photographs would reflect the portfolio and the previous work. This guy should be capable of offering something more. He should be able to merge with the guests, he should be a nice and cheerful companion, who can hold a friendly conversation. The guests will accept him more easily and they won’t feel like there is some paparazzi wandering around them the whole day. This applies to the communication with a bride and a groom as well.
Nervousness disappears
Another fact, related to getting known each other, is that you will get rid of certain nervousness in advance. There won’t be a strange guy moving around you during the wedding anymore, but somebody who you already know, who you trust and somebody, who can entertain you and cheer you up if necessary. You will get used to the presence of a camera and with time you won’t be aware of it at all and continuos photographing will suddenly feel normal.
Small tips and tricks
During each photoshoot I communicate with clients a lot and I try to let them have a look behind the scenes, so that they would better understand why I sometimes want them to do this or that. Although you may like candid shots very much and you would prefer to have majority photos like these, some more arranged situations will always come. Often it is only a small advice that helps you appeal more elegant and natural in front of a camera. When you know a few small tips and tricks how to look your best, not only the photographs will look nicer, but it will boost your confidence as well.
Your relationship
It might have seem so far that engagement photography is a kind of training or practise for the wedding. That is not true by far. Together we can peek more deeply into the history of your relationship and focus on the moments that were important to you. For example, we can photograph at the places where you met, where you arranged your first date or where you kissed each other for the first time. There are endless possibilities how to be creative. Among the suitable situations, I can highlight walks thru a city, stops at cozy coffee shops, flower gardens visits or going to nature. Mostly the sessions take part outdoors, however, many ideas can be executed in a studio too.
Secret engagement
At the end, I would like to inspire mainly the men. Together we can discuss and prepare a suitable situation for a secret engagement. You will surprise your partner, when you propose to her at an unexpected moment during a relatively ordinary walk, giving her an engagement ring. This way we can create unique and unrepeatable photographs. It is essential that your partner won’t have a clue about it and till the last second doesn’t notice the presence of a photographer, who is ready at the spot agreed earlier. It is possible to shoot continuously, until the proposal happens, if the environment allows it.
When to schedule it?
It is up to you how much in advance you feel like going for an engagement session. Nice opportunity when to schedule it — unless you are thinking about a secret engagement — can be during a pre-wedding meeting and while booking a wedding photographer.
